Center for Sustainability

The Center for Sustainability is where the Agnes Scott community learns about the challenges of global climate change, including climate and environmental justice. Our mission is to seek collaborations on innovative and equitable solutions for sustainability on and off campus.

The Center is staffed by an executive director, one sustainability fellow, 实习生, work-study students, and student volunteers. The current full-time staff are all Agnes Scott alums. We work with students, faculty, and staff on projects including:

  • Climate action and climate resilience planning
  • Energy and water efficiency upgrades
  • Renewable energy installations
  • Recycling and composting
  • Environmental justice
  • Maintenance of the campus arboretum and sustainable landscaping
  • Student involvement and activities, including Environmental Residents in each residence hall
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum initiatives, including a minor in environmental sustainability studies

President Leocadia I. Zak and Susan Kidd Named USGBC 2020 South Atlantic Women to Watch

President Leocadia I. Zak and Executive Director of Sustainability, Susan Kidd, were named USGBC 2020 South Atlantic Women to Watch! The United States Green Building Council’s Women in Green initiative is a worldwide leadership platform that celebrates women who are shifting the narrative on empowerment, 访问, and impact in the clean energy economy. The initiative launched their “Sheroes, Stand Up” leadership recognition campaign this year to acknowledge the women catalyzing change and creating a greener, healthier and more equitable future. We are so proud to see that not one, but two incredible women leaders from the Agnes Scott College community are on the list.

Agnes Scott Named Tree Campus USA for the 12th Year in A Row

Agnes Scott College has been recognized as a Tree Campus - for twelve years in a row! The program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management, and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Agnes Scott meets the five core standards of this program by having a campus Arboretum Advisory Committee, adopting a Tree Care Plan, putting routine maintenance and care into our campus trees, celebrating Georgia's Arbor Day, and coordinating yearly service projects aimed at engaging the student body. Trees provide many benefits, including being a solution to combating the effects of climate change.
